Economics at the End of Days

The chapter of Revelation describes economics at the end of days.  To put this in context, this will occur during the reign of a powerful despotic multi-leader government which we studied earlier in "Government at the End of Days" who persecutes those who do not agree with it.

During this time, food will become extremely expensive:
I heard what sounded like a voice coming from among the four living creatures, which said, "A kilo of wheat for a day's wages, and three kilos of barley for a day's wages.  But do not damage the olive trees and the vineyards!"
Revelation 6:6

This Bible verse is interpreted by scholars to indicate an exorbitantly high price for food.  Will there be a food shortage in those times, or is the government in power simply raising the price artificially?  Either way, food will become expensive.

Furthermore, in order to buy or sell anything at all, people of this time are required to have an identifying mark in the beast's name:
The beast forced all the people, small and great, rich and poor, slave and free, to have a mark placed on their right hands or on their foreheads.  No one could buy or sell without this mark, that is, the beast's name or the number that stands for the name.
Revelation 13: 16-17

God makes it clear that we must not receive this mark, even if it means starvation and death:
A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.

Revelation 14: 9-12

What is the nature of this mark on the forehead or hand that we must avoid? It could be anything, from a simple stamped insignia to a microchip ID device containing credit card information, to something entirely new that we can't yet conceive of.

Take-home message
The economic situation will be very dire at the end of days.  Food will become astronomically expensive.  Receiving the mark allowing buying and selling (insignia? embedded ID chip? something new?) is tantamount to worshipping the beast, so followers of God must avoid receiving this mark no matter what.
