What happens to your prayers?

One of my favorite verses of the Bible relates to what happens to your prayers. This was about the devout centurion named Cornelius. In this Bible passage, it tells us exactly what happened to the prayers of Cornelius:

In Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of the Italian Cohort, as it was called. He was a devout man who feared God with all his household; he gave alms generously to the people and prayed constantly to God. One afternoon at about three o’clock he had a vision in which he clearly saw an angel of God coming in and saying to him, ‘Cornelius.’ He stared at him in terror and said, ‘What is it, Lord?’ He answered, ‘Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. Now send men to Joppa for a certain Simon who is called Peter; he is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside.’

Acts 10: 1-6

In the above passage we can see that his prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God. Wow!

That is not only exciting but also encouraging to us that something so tangible happens. From this passage we see that our prayers can generate a memorial that God sees.

Does every prayer you make become part of a memorial? The passage doesn't say. But it is clear that this is what can happen when you pray frequently to God such as Cornelius did.

So it's best to think of each prayer we make as a building block in something tangible and visible. It's not a random thing that vanishes into the ether. Prayer, even for (especially for) things we may never see in our lifetime still results in something noticeable and tangible at God's end.

When you feel discouraged, have the confidence of knowing that your prayers can turn into a memorial before God. Don't stop praying. The only person you will hurt by not praying is yourself, because you'd be missing out on knowing God better through prayer.
