Our Difficult Physical and Spiritual Lives at the End of Days
A period of worldwide suffering will occur at the End of Days just prior to the return of Jesus. This suffering is due at least in part to oppressive governance that will occur here on earth and a dire economic situation at that time. Yet, there will be plenty of physical suffering that is additional to this. Just a few of the many Bible verses describing the end of days say:
Another horse came out, a red one. Its rider was given the power to bring war on the earth, so that people would kill each other. He was given a large sword.
Revelation 6:4
I looked, and there was a pale-colored horse. Its rider was named Death, and Hades followed close behind. They were given authority over a quarter of the earth, to kill by means of war, famine, disease and wild animals.
Revelation 6:8
Then those who are in Judea must run away to the hills. Someone who is on the roof of a house must not take the time to go down and get any belongings from the house. Someone who is out in the open must not go back to get a cloak.
Matthew 24:16-18
How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant and for mothers with little babies! Pray to God that these things will not happen in the winter!
Mark 13: 17-18
Certainly, the consensus is that anyone who will be alive in those times will undergo physical suffering of almost unsupportable proportions.
This then leads into the issue of spiritual suffering. Many believers will cease to be faithful to God during this horrific time when they experience that level of physical suffering, possibly under the mistaken impression that God has left them:
Then you will be arrested and handed over to be punished and be put to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. Many will give up their faith at that time; they will betray one another and hate one another.
Matthew 24: 9-10
In fact, so few will remain faithful that God makes it clear in the Bible that he has already reduced the period of suffering such that at least some faithful followers will remain:
But the Lord has reduced the number of those days; if he had not, nobody would survive. For the sake of his chosen people, however, he has reduced those days.
Mark 13: 20
However, the truth is that God has not forsaken them, and that anyone who remains faithful to God will ultimately be saved:
Such will be the spread of evil that many people's love will grow cold. But whoever holds out to the end will be saved.
Matthew 24: 12-13
Take-home message: at the End of Days, extreme physical and spiritual suffering will occur worldwide. However, all who remain faithful to God will be saved.
