Implantable chips now used in company for cafeteria-style payments - one step closer to the Mark of the Beast?

I've talked before about what the Bible says about the Mark of the Beast and you can recap that here. Up until now, there wasn't an implanted technology in everyday use that was actually being utilized to make payments as described in Revelation 13.

This has recently changed. NPR reported that a U.S. company has offered to implant chips in the hands of their employees (see reference 1). These chips allow them to make cafeteria-style payments. In other words, a chip inside their hand will be used to identify the employee and to deduct funds from their cafeteria account when making purchases. It is an opt-in program, so the employees are not being compelled to do it.

Let's take a look at what the Bible says about the Mark of the Beast:

Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell who does not have the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.

Revelation 13: 16-17

Do I believe this implanted chip is the Mark of the Beast itself? It may or may not be: while the mark of the beast sounds like it could be the same as the implanted chip, the Bible says that the Mark of the Beast is to occur at the End of Days and there are other events that will occur leading up to that time. At the time of the Mark of the Beast, this mark will be made mandatory for everyone on Earth.  Even so,  Christians absolutely should defy the rulers of the day and must refuse to receive this technology, no matter how tempting it is to go along with it:

A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.

Revelation 14: 9-12

Therefore at all costs, we must avoid receiving this mark.

Because other events of end times have not yet come to pass and there is no Beast on earth at the moment, I do not believe the U.S. company mentioned in reference 1 is necessarily putting the actual Mark of the Beast on people. However I do feel we are certainly a big step closer to the End of Days than we were before this news came out. Before this, no implanted technology was being used in an everyday way to process payments. Now this has changed. Of course, the actual Mark of the Beast may not even be this exact same technology; it may be something quite different, or it may be a more advanced version of this technology.  However, what is important is the need to be watchful as changes occur in this space.

There is no need to be scared, but there is a need to be watchful. Many people will be taken in by the beast (see Revelation 13: 11-15) and the best preparation to avoid this is to know the signs and to remain watchful.

At the End of Days, many other events will come to pass that are prophesied in the Bible. One of these is that the regions now known as Greece and Iran will go to war against each other (see Daniel chapters 8 and 9). So we are not at the End of Days just yet, but we have moved a big step closer. This is because the type of technology prophesied in the Mark of the Beast is not just possible in theory, but actually implementable in practice, using the technology of today.
