Misinformation and the role of the tongue

With so much misinformation floating around, it's important not to unwittingly repeat things we may have heard if we don't know they're true. Indeed, much of the advice of Solomon in the book of Proverbs can be readily applied to today's problem of misinformation, which I have mentioned here.

But it's not only in Solomon that we can find warnings about lies and misinformation. Take a look at this passage from Jeremiah:

They bend their tongues like bows;
they have grown strong in the land for falsehood, and not for truth;
for they proceed from evil to evil,
and they do not know me, says the Lord.

Jeremiah 9: 3

The book of James also shows how powerful the tongue is:

If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits.

How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire!

James 3: 3-5

We should be careful not to blindly repeat what we have heard others say. A tongue can be the seat of lies or of truth - it's up to its owner.

In addition to guarding our own tongues, we need to beware of the sayings of others - whether it's online misinformation or a friend just repeating something they heard from someone else without checking, or even an enemy trying to snare us into their lies.

As we have seen in the passages above, the Bible warns us about the harm that can be done when the tongue is used for misinformation, regardless of whether this is done intentionally or unintentionally. We cannot say that we haven't been warned of this.
